Curriculum Project: Writing Handbook

becoming a college writer text cover

Becoming a College Writer, a curriculum published by Chemeketa Press

I coauthored this curriculum published by Chemeketa Press. Becoming a College Writer is a handbook tailored to first-year student writers, but it can provide useful review and practice on key writing concepts for any writer.

The goal of the text is to present ideas in simple, accessible terms, without overwhelming users with advanced concepts.

The text covers three areas: writing process, essay format, and common usage errors.

This project spanned over a year between start and publication. The process involved the following stages:

  1. Proposal
We conducted initial discussions and research for the text, after which we submitted a formal proposal to the publisher.

  2. Needs Analysis
Discussions with the editorial staff at the publisher helped us clarify goals and limitations for the project. The curriculum needed to meet the affordability standards of Chemeketa Press, as well as satisfy the expectations of potential users.

  3. Research
After the proposal was accepted by the publisher, we conducted further research, including surveys sent to SMEs and target users.

  4. Drafts
Working closely with an editorial staff, we drafted an early version of the curriculum.

  5. Revisions
We received feedback on the draft from SMEs and the editors at the publishers. The feedback informed the revision process as we improved the text to improve usability and quality standards.

  6. Publication

The text was published and is available in both print and digital formats.
